The Man and the Reason Behind The Wooden Course

John R Wooden

A Brief History

John R. Wooden was born in Indiana in 1910. Wooden was raised on a farm which helped him develop a strong work ethic. However, when he wasn’t working, Wooden enjoyed playing basketball with his brothers.

In high school, he became a star basketball player, leading his school to the Indiana State championship. He then went on to earn multiple All-American selections as a guard at Purdue University. He graduated from Purdue with a degree in English and with honors as well as the title of the College Basketball Player of the Year Award.

After college, Wooden became a Kentucky high school English teacher as well as coach for multiple athletic teams at the school. He later moved back to Indiana where he taught English and coached basketball, baseball, and tennis. During this time, he began developing the principles of his “Pyramid of Success” teaching model with the goal of inspiring his students and teams to achieve their potential.

In World War II, Wooden served as a Navy lieutenant, then returned home and became the athletic director and basketball and baseball coach at Indiana State Teachers College. He then later took over as the basketball coach of UCLA in 1948.Twenty-seven years later in 1975, he coached his final game at UCLA, and won his 10th NCAA Championship – the stuff of legends.

Wooden’s real work had just begun. For the next 35 years, Wooden’s principles, values, and wisdom spread worldwide. Even after his passing in 2010, his importance as a coach, teacher, and mentor continues to grow for everyone at every level of society who seeks to do their best and be their best. Wooden shows the Way.
